This 1960s Wassily Chair by Gavina belongs to the early Italian editions of the Bauhaus design that Marcel Breuer presented in 1925. Chrome-plated steel tube forms the load-bearing frame, across which strips of lacquered leather in light beige are stretched: one for the back, one for the seat, plus armrests and a neck band. The chrome is evenly preserved; the leather has lost its initial gloss and now appears matt and cream-coloured, with the fine tension creases that only develop in genuine saddle leather. The seating comfort comes from the tension of the leather strips rather than from upholstery, which is why this Bauhaus armchair still holds its shape after decades. As a reading chair beside a floor lamp or as a single piece in a study, it remains present without filling the room, because you can see right through it. Originals by Gavina are sought after by collectors and considerably rarer than later licensed series.

At Zeitwerk Home, we prioritise sustainability by applying traditional techniques and using natural materials, oils and resins. We pay particular attention to the environmental friendliness of our work, ensuring that no harmful substances are used. However, the most important aspect of our philosophy is that nothing is more sustainable than an object that lasts a lifetime. Our furniture is carefully restored and processed so that it endures for generations. With today’s booming throwaway mentality, we want nothing to do with it.

Whether modification or Newly Made – we are happy to adapt this piece of furniture entirely to your wishes for an additional fee. We can modify the product shown in terms of colour, dimensions or details, as well as implement a bespoke Newly Made version based on this design. Contact us for your individual requests, preferably directly via the chat at the bottom right.
