Material: The classic cantilever chair was originally designed by Mart Stam and further developed by designers such as Marcel Breuer or Mies van der Rohe. During the 1930s, various manufacturers, mostly for or in cooperation with Thonet, produced the chair in large quantities. The seat and backrests are made of moulded beech plywood. Sometimes they are veneered with oak or walnut. The steel tube frame is chrome-plated. We have a large stock of unrestored chairs which we can finish in colours to your wishes.

This Bauhaus chair by Mart Stam from the 1930s is lacquered in RAL 1021 Rapeseed Yellow, a rich, deep shade of yellow that gives the chrome-plated steel tube frame a colour effect unusually warm for Bauhaus furniture. The frame of bent chrome-plated steel tube works as a cantilever: with no rear legs, the tube itself provides the springing, which gives the seat a noticeable lightness. Seat and backrest are made of moulded beech plywood, clamped directly into the steel tube frame. Czechoslovak production of these chairs was closely tied to Thonet from the 1930s onwards and served the Europe-wide market for cantilever chairs after Stam and Breuer. The chrome frame is in very good condition, and the yellow lacquer is freshly applied. As a dining chair, this 1930s cantilever chair suits tables 75 to 78 cm in height. In a study or dining room it sets a clearly historical accent. Other colours are available on request from the existing stock of unrestored chairs.

At Zeitwerk Home, we prioritise sustainability by applying traditional techniques and using natural materials, oils and resins. We pay particular attention to the environmental friendliness of our work, ensuring that no harmful substances are used. However, the most important aspect of our philosophy is that nothing is more sustainable than an object that lasts a lifetime. Our furniture is carefully restored and processed so that it endures for generations. With today’s booming throwaway mentality, we want nothing to do with it.

Whether modification or Newly Made – we are happy to adapt this piece of furniture entirely to your wishes for an additional fee. We can modify the product shown in terms of colour, dimensions or details, as well as implement a bespoke Newly Made version based on this design. Contact us for your individual requests, preferably directly via the chat at the bottom right.
