As the first cantilevered plastic chair in design history, the “Panton Chair” by Verner Panton embodies the innovative spirit of the 1960s and 70s. This original pair from the 1970s is made from moulded plastic and displays the characteristic S-curve shape – a design that functions without rear legs yet combines stability with organic lightness. The bold orange colour underscores the expressive character of the Space Age and references the pop culture of that era. Originally developed from glass-fibre reinforced polyester, later models – such as these – were manufactured from polypropylene or ABS using injection moulding. First produced in series by Vitra (Europe) and Herman Miller (USA), the Panton Chair is today regarded as a symbol of futuristic design and radical form. Stackable, striking, functional – a classic that continues to fascinate.
