ad-1637
1930s Bauhaus Desk, Ebonised with Linoleum Top

This Bauhaus desk from the 1930s is ebonised and carries a black linoleum work surface, a combination that was common in German office furniture of those years. The wooden carcass was stained black throughout and then hand polished with shellac, creating a deep, silky sheen in which light breaks softly. The drawers and the top are edged in solid beech, whose light edge visibly frames the black. Handles and frame are made of chrome-plated steel tube and take up the formal language of the Bauhaus. Linoleum is the right surface for writing, as it is neither cold nor slippery and absorbs pressure. At 120 cm wide and 65 cm deep, the 1930s desk also fits into a smaller study, and the working height of 76 cm meets today's standards. The piece has been fully restored and is in excellent condition.
