ad-1439
1930s Bauhaus Desk by Thonet

This Bauhaus desk by Thonet from the 1930s shows the construction with which the company brought the tubular steel furniture of classic modernism into series production: a continuously bent frame of chrome-plated steel tube that carries the top and the drawer unit at the same time. Top and carcass are veneered in light wood, its grain running in calm bands and appearing warm honey-coloured under the clear finish. Three drawers sit in the carcass, their flat bow handles also chrome-plated, and the top drawer can be locked. The frame sets the legs wide apart, so nothing gets in the way beneath the desk and the chair can move freely. At 133 cm wide and 69 cm deep, the 1930s desk is large enough for two work areas side by side, and the working height of 75 cm meets today's standards. It suits a study in an old building just as well as a modern office. The condition is excellent, with veneer and chrome preserved throughout.
